Time has become increasingly precious in today’s society because we are always busy, always on the go. We have managed to pack our days full with work, meetings, school, sports, and social time. As a student, I spend hours in class and doing homework every day, and as a student-athlete, I spent 20+ hours training, working out, and traveling each week. Not to mention the extra requirements of helping with recruiting, team bonding, and the activities of the average college student. Most nights I will get about 6-7 hours of sleep if I’m lucky. So when am I supposed to take the time to do meal planning and grocery shopping? Eating healthy is important for an athlete, and any student trying to avoid the extra pounds, while also feeling full. It really just becomes another added stress for me and I tend to give up most nights of the week and pizza easily becomes dinner (don’t get me wrong, I LOVE pizza, but I don’t love gaining weight).
I’ve read a ton of reviews of HelloFresh– some from parents, those who are retired, and young newly weds which was closely related to me due to age. They were truly honest and helpful in a lot of ways, sharing how beneficial it was and what they thought of the idea, and I started to look into it. Now I must admit, I had an added challenge when I got knee surgery and was officially non-weight bearing for 6+ weeks. Imagine trying to shop like that (it is impossible, I’ll spoil the surprise for you). So I needed some options. As nice as it was to have people take me to the store, it was certainly exhausting, and only good for getting what I really needed. This caused me to look into HelloFresh even more and decide if it was worth it. So I jumped in and ordered my first box two weeks ago, and got my first delivery this past Tuesday.
Only two words needed for this. Love it. Truly it was really awesome and better than I expected. My parents shared some thoughts about it since they had used it themselves, but experiencing it yourself is a lot better, and it was a great first week. I took some pictures of my first experience so I could even show how great it was, and describe it better too.
Step 1: Ordering your first HelloFresh box
So the first order is 50% off which is a really cool incentive. They offer a few different plans such as the Classic Plan, the Veggie Plan, and the Family Plan. The Classic and Veggie plans are both $9.99 per meal, and the Family plan is $8.74 per meal which are very reasonable. You can order for two people or four people, and pick three, four, or five meals to have delivered. You can see their plans here on their website. I chose the Classic Plan and meals for two people, so I could use it as leftovers or as a way to spend time with a friend, by cooking it with them. When they deliver it, they have cooling packs in it as well to keep the meats and other items as fresh as possible which was awesome since I couldn’t get home until later that afternoon to take it inside. My overall total for my first box was $29.94, and the following orders will be $59.94, for a total of 6 meals, since I order 3 meals per week. They give you about 8 options to choose from, which is a great variety.
Step 2: Receiving your HelloFresh box
Not going to lie this was kind of exciting. I didn’t really know what to expect but it definitely exceeded my expectations. I would recommend downloading their app, because it tells you when your box is out for delivery and when it is delivered. When I brought it inside hours after it had been delivered, everything was still really cold and fresh and everything was packaged neatly and in order which is something I really appreciated. You can tell they take it seriously and are very professional about what they do. Everything appears very fresh which is very reassuring for cooking healthy meals.
Everything that came in the boxes was packaged so well and was the right amount! I really loved how organized it was and it made it easy to know what to use, and you save a lot of time and money by having the right amount of everything.
Step 3: Cooking your awesome meals
I think one of the benefits of ordering Hello Fresh is that they also send you a recipe card for every meal you order which is super helpful so you can go step by step.
They also give you exactly what you need besides salt, pepper, and olive oil, but otherwise you have what you need right in your box. They share every step which makes it straight forward and easier. If I had any complaints, I would say that sometimes it doesn’t feel specific enough, especially for a college student who doesn’t know a lot about cooking, but that is my main complaint about it. My first box had Presto Pesto Panko Chicken, DIY Dumplings, and Lean Green Steak Machine, which are all awesome.
It all tastes fresh and is very filling, and are perfect for leftovers. Overall I had a ton of fun making them too! My boyfriend and I actually cooked one of the meals together which was is a way we like to spend time together and ended up being really cool.
To close, I would say HelloFresh is a really great investment. I love that I can order a few meals a week to save the trouble of constantly grocery shopping for huge amounts of food, and that I can enjoy a few cheat meals out with my friends. It has saved me a lot of time and stress this past week, and as someone who loves to cook, it’s very enjoyable. The clean up is easy and the food tastes awesome. I am really looking forward to my next box and the meals that will come with it. I also think that it is financially beneficial, since meal plan for on-campus dining can be expensive and also not healthy, so I have found many great reasons to use HelloFresh as a college student, who wants to eat healthy and enjoy food simultaneously. If you are considering HelloFresh, I would recommend trying it for a week, you can always cancel your subscription or skip a week if needed. So jump on in to your first box, and enjoy cooking again!
